Description
When taking my photograph, the only thing running through my mind was how to capture a moment that was part of a daily routine and make the image worthwhile to look at. The easiest subjects to make this possible are children. While I was babysitting my cousins I was able to document this moment as one-year-old, Declan, was getting ready for bed. I was inspired by photojournalist Elliott Erwitt. One of his typical subjects is children because of the innocence that they radiate. He also took candid photographs of people up close. I wanted to combine two aspects of his photography into one when photographing Declan. I selected this photograph because of the color of his eyes, staring into the camera. I contemplated changing the photograph to black and white, like most of Elliott Erwitt’s photos, but I thought this particular image was stronger in color.

Notes
Elliott Erwitt often took pictures to display wit, humor, and mystery in his photographs. The photograph that inspired my Image to Image photograph was part of Erwitt’s Tell collection. This collection displayed humor and mystery as an exchange between people. Most of the time the subjects did not even know they were being photographed, and because of this, Erwitt was able to capture a candid moment. The purpose of his Tell collection is to show there are more ways to ‘tell’ what is going on than with just words. His images were often glimpses of someone’s gestures, uniforms, and expressions. This photograph stood out to me because the exchange depicted between siblings is part of everyday life. As viewers we do not know exactly what is going on in this photo but we get an idea because of the expression of the children.
